Maeda pitches well in his comeback.
Genta Maeda of the Minnesota Twins pitched a complete game against the Detroit Tigers in the 2023 Major League Baseball game at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., on June 24.
Maeda started the game and pitched five scoreless innings.
Maeda was making his return from injury. It was his first start since going on the disabled list with a right triceps strain on April 28, nearly two months ago. In four rehab starts at Triple-A, Maeda has a 2.03 ERA in 13.1 innings pitched.
Maeda started the game with an 89.1-mile-per-hour outside fastball to leadoff hitter Zach McKinstry in the first inning. After walking McKinstry on five pitches, Maeda gave up a single to Spencer Tokelson to put runners on first and second with no outs. But he struck out Kerry Carpenter on a splitter and got Javier Baez to fly out to end the first.
In the second, he retired Nick Meyton, Matt Biering, and Miguel Cabrera on swinging strikes to end the inning. His splitter and slider were sharp.
In the third, he struck out Zach Short and Jake Rogers, then gave up a single to McKinstry but retired Torkelson on a flyout. In the fourth, he got Carpenter and Baez to fly out and Meyton to strike out to end the inning.
Maeda walked Biering in the fifth and gave up a single to Cabrera. He then struck out short and gave up a walk to Rogers to put runners in scoring position.
Maeda continued to shake his head as his coach visited the mound to make a pitching change, showing his determination to finish the inning himself. Eventually, the bench relented, and the new pitcher opened the bullpen door and walked out and back in. Maeda struck out McKinstry, who hadn’t faced a batter in his first two at-bats, to end the fifth inning.
Maeda threw 83 pitches over five innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Maeda, who threw his first no-hitter of the season, came off the mound in the sixth inning with a 4-0 lead and was on the verge of his first win of the season. 메이저놀이터
