Kim Min-jae-Kane nightmare debut…first win denied by non-selection

From being left out to failing to win, it was an official debut nightmare.

Bayern Munich debutants Kim Min-jae and Harry Kane bowed their heads side by side. After being left out of the starting lineup against Leipzig in the German DFL Super Cup at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on Nov. 13 (KST), the pair tasted the bitter taste of defeat. The ‘debut victory’ that both Kim Min-jae and Kane were hoping for was wasted.

From the moment the starting lineup was announced, there was a sense of cheapness. Kim Min-jae’s exclusion was particularly shocking. After joining Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, local media and even the Bundesliga secretariat had expected him to start. Given his performances at Napoli last season, as well as his competitiveness in preseason after his move, it was a natural expectation.

However, Thomas Tuchel opted to start Matthias Dürich and Dayo Upamecano in place of Kim. Upamecano was in the starting lineup instead of Kim Min-jae, who was expected to partner Diricht. Without Kim, the defense fell apart early, conceding back-to-back goals in the third and 44th minutes of the first half. Tuchel acknowledged the deficiencies in his starting lineup by removing Diricht at halftime and bringing on Kim Min-jae.

Making his official debut as a substitute, Kim anchored the defense with a number of crucial tackles. He also made two clearances and completed 95 percent of his passes. In the second half, Bayern Munich didn’t concede any more field goals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the momentum, as they conceded a penalty wedge in the 23rd minute for a handball foul.

Kane, who left Tottenham for Bayern Munich to win a “title,” was not smiling either. Kane was hastily named to the Super Cup roster after his move was finalized the day before. But he didn’t get a starting spot right away. Tuchel opted to start 2005 sensation Mathis Thiel up front instead. 토토사이트

However, Bayern Munich were out-shot 5-6 despite having 71% of the possession. With the two-goal deficit unable to be closed, Kane was brought on in the 19th minute of the second half. However, the team’s spirits completely sank as they conceded another goal just four minutes after his introduction. Kane only touched the ball three times in about 30 minutes. It was another sigh of frustration for Kane, who would have been hoping to unlock the door to a trophy with Tottenham.

Warning lights were also on for Bayern Munich. The Bavarians had invested heavily in Kim Min-jae and Kane, but the 0-3 defeat in the first leg was a blow to their pride. It was the first time in four years that the Bavarians hadn’t won the Super Cup since 2019. It was a bittersweet start for Kim and Kane, who were hoping to start fresh with a title.
