The South Korea Under-20 football team, led by head coach Kim Eun-joong, drew 2-2 with Honduras in their second match of Group F at the FIFA U20 World Cup 2023 at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina on Saturday at 6 a.m. ET.
South Korea, which defeated France 2-1 in the first leg, is second in the group with one win and one draw. The Gambia tops the group. The Gambia has won two straight games against Honduras and France. South Korea and the Gambia will play their third game on Sept. 29.
South Korea came out in a 4-5-1 formation. Kim Jun-hong was in goal, while Park Chang-woo, Choi Seok-hyun, Kim Ji-soo, and Bae Seo-joon formed the defense. The midfield consisted of Kim Yong-hak, Lee Seung-won, Bae Jun-ho, Kang Sung-jin, and Kang Sang-yoon, with Lee Young-joon starting up top.
The goal came early on. In the 22nd minute, Choi Seok-hyun committed a foul and conceded a penalty kick (PK). David Luiz converted the PK to give South Korea the lead. Moments later, a big change came. In the 27th minute, Ochoa hit Bae Seo-Joon. After reviewing the VAR, the referee ordered Ochoa to be sent off. Korea’s Kim Yong-hak, Park Chang-woo, and Lee Seung-won had a series of shots on goal, but they were blocked by the Honduran defense.
At the start of the second half, Bae Seo-joon was taken off and Choi Ye-hoon came on. In the sixth minute of the second half, Korea conceded another goal. Isaac Castillo scored the second goal for Honduras. Soon after, South Korea made a change, removing Bae Jun-ho and Park Chang-woo and adding Park Seung-ho and Cho Young-kwang.
In the 13th minute of the second half, South Korea got the equalizer. Kim Yong-hak opened the scoring for Honduras with a left-footed shot. Korea added another goal in the 17th minute. Park Seung-ho headed in a corner kick to tie the game at 2-2. Shortly after the equalizer, Park Seung-ho was injured and had to be substituted out.
South Korea continued to push forward in the second half. Kang Sung-jin beat several defenders inside the penalty box and struck a right-footed shot into the arms of the goalkeeper. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Choi Seok-hyun was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for blocking a Honduran counterattack.
