One area to watch for Klinsmann during September’s A matches is up front.
Jürgen Klinsmann, a former world-class striker, has yet to find a “built-in striker” for the South Korean national team.
None of the ‘European trio’ of Hwang Eui-jo (Norwich City), Cho Kyu-sung (Mitwillan), and Oh Hyun-kyu (Celtic) can hit the ground running.
Until June, Hwang’s prospects looked the brightest.
In the fourth minute of the final match of Klinsmann’s tournament against El Salvador, he beat a defender in the penalty area on a solo run before turning and firing a right-footed shot that rattled the net.
The goal must have impressed Klinsmann, as it was an individual effort with the rest of the team silent.
Of the three, however, Hwang’s recent form has been the most cloudy. After returning to his home club Nottingham Forest (England) from FC Seoul, he hasn’t gotten much playing time in the new season.
He made six consecutive appearances in Nottingham’s preseason, but was not given a chance after the start of the season and was eventually sent out on loan to second-tier Norwich City.
He hasn’t played since a friendly against Stade Rennes (France) on March 3.
In fact, it wasn’t all smiles for Hwang, with Cho Kyu-sung and Oh Hyun-gyu also picking up injuries ahead of the September A match.
However, both players managed to return in time.
Cho Kyu-sung, in particular, made his comeback on the first of this month, playing 86 minutes against Aarhus on the 4th and scoring an attacking point.
He missed the first leg of the UECL playoffs and back-to-back league games after limping off during a league match on March 21, but his performance since returning has allayed concerns.
Cho, who raised his profile with a two-goal blast against Ghana in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar, was actually Klinsmann’s choice to start against Colombia in March on his debut.
However, he has struggled for the national team since then and will need to make up for it during the A-match.
Cho also started his last match for the national team, against El Salvador in June, but missed all of his chances to score.

Since arriving in Denmark in July, Cho has scored three goals in the regular season and one in the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) qualifiers.
